Cataract & cataract surgery: professional treatment by your ophthalmologist at Focus Eye Clinic
What Is cataract, what symptoms do you recognize and how does cataract surgery work?
What is cataract?

Cataracts, also known as cataracts, are a common eye disease in which the lens of the eye gradually becomes cloudy. This process can be accelerated by aging, but hereditary factors, certain diseases (such as diabetes) or prolonged exposure to UV light can also play a role in the development of cataracts.
Typical symptoms include blurred, cloudy or even double vision, difficulty driving in the dark and reduced color contrast. In the early stages, these symptoms are sometimes barely noticeable, but as the lens becomes more cloudy, daily activities can become increasingly difficult.
A thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist (ophthalmologist) at a specialized eye clinic or eye center is the best way to detect cataracts early. They assess lens clarity and can determine if cataract surgery is necessary. Such cataract treatment involves replacing the affected lens with an artificial lens, restoring your vision clarity. This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and generally has a short recovery time.
With proper cataract surgery and aftercare, you can once again enjoy sharp colors and improved vision. For many people, this means a lasting improvement in quality of life and the ability to perform daily activities, such as driving and reading, again without difficulty.
Symptoms of cataracts

Cataract or cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye and the leading cause of low vision worldwide, especially in people over 55. No improvement in vision is possible without treatment.
The following symptoms are possible with cataracts:
- Blurred vision (such as looking through dirty or scratched glasses)
- Reduction in vision
- Double vision
- Increased light sensitivity
- Reduced color perception (colors fade or blur)
- Difficulty driving in darkness
Are you experiencing one or more of the above cataract symptoms? Make an appointment for a thorough analysis of your options.

Cataract surgery: When to have this eye condition treated?

Treatment of cataracts or cataracts is necessary when visual acuity is reduced to the extent that daily visual efforts become difficult (e.g., driving a car, watching TV, reading, etc.).
There are no drugs that can cure cataracts. Unfortunately, cataract treatment without surgery is not possible. Glasses or extra lighting can bring temporary improvement, but vision will slowly but surely be further affected by cataracts.
Do you have cataracts and also wear reading glasses? It may be worth considering multifocal or bifocal implant lenses. You will be relieved of cataracts and can continue to go through life glasses-free.
Cataract surgery: Which technique to choose?

Cataract surgery with phaco-emulsification
Phako-emulsification is the classic technique for removing a cataract. This involves removing the lens via ultrasound. Incisions will also be made via scalpel or bistouri.
- The incisions are made via scalpel.
- The capsular aperture is made by hand.
- The cloudy lens is crushed using ultrasound.
In principle, all forms of cataracts can be remedied by this cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery with Femto Laser
Focus Eye Clinic has FemotLaser technology and the best cataract surgeons. This allows the next steps of cataract surgery to be fully automated:
- The incisions are calibrated to the microscopic level.
- The capsular opening is perfectly round.
- The cloudy lens is divided into small pieces by the laser.
- Astigmatism can be eliminated through limbal relaxation incisions.
This Femto-Lasik treatment takes around 4 minutes.

Phaco-emulsification vs. Femto-Laser: Which cataract surgery best suits your eye condition?
The benefits of Phaco-emulsification technique in cataract surgery | The advantages of Femto-Laser technique in cataract surgery | |
---|---|---|
Incision | Knife (scalpel) | Laser |
Healing | Slight irritation | Painless |
Safety | Little risk | Extra safe and precise |
Capsular opening | Irregular by hand | Perfectly round capsule opening via automation |
Astigmatism treatment | No astigmatism treatment | Removal of astigmatism |

MONOFOCAL LENS: Far sight without glasses
Generally, people choose to see well from afar. However, since the lens has only one focal point, it is not possible to see well from afar and from close without glasses. With this lens, the patient can see well from afar and can do their daily activities without glasses. Any close-up task such as reading, eating, tablet will have to be done with reading glasses.

BIFOCAL (or EDOF) LENS: sharp distance vision without glasses and partial spectacle freedom for near vision
Patients who no longer wish to wear glasses after surgery can choose this option. This lens provides good vision from afar without glasses and reasonable independence from reading glasses. The patient can perform tasks such as reading, eating and tablet use without glasses. However, detailed close-up tasks will always require reading glasses.

MULTIFOCAL LENS: Completely without glasses, both far, intermediate and near
This is a new type of lens with revolutionary technology. Not only distant and near vision is possible without glasses. Intermediate (computer vision) is also possible without glasses. This lens will mimic the accommodation of the natural lens by creating 3 different focal points. Thus, the patient will be glasses-free.

Thanks to my multifocal implant lens, I no longer have to change glasses and enjoy comfortable, sharp vision every day - both near and far.
