What are dry eyes?

Dry eyes, also called "dry eye syndrome" or "keratoconjunctivitis sicca," occur when the tear film is too little or of insufficient quality. As a result, the tear fluid evaporates too quickly or is not produced enough, leading to dry, burning eyes, itching and sometimes dry eyelids. The cause of dry eyes can range from environmental factors (air conditioning, monitor work) to wearing lenses or taking certain medications. Hormonal changes, such as menopause, can also play a role.

While many wonder if dry eye is dangerous, it is primarily an annoying and sometimes painful condition. Untreated, however, it can lead to irritation, minor corneal damage and even an increased risk of eye infections. Fortunately, several treatments for dry eyes are available. With dry eye eye drops, eye gels or special dry eye lenses, relief is often quickly noticeable. For more severe or chronic symptoms, an ophthalmologist or specialist can investigate which therapy - for example, warm compresses, artificial tears without preservatives or advanced technologies - is best for your situation.

Causes of dry eyes

Man in office rubs his tired eyes, possibly caused by screen work and dry environment.

Dryness of the eyes occurs because the tear glands do not produce enough tears or if the tears are of insufficient quality causing them to evaporate more quickly. Tear fluid is essential for proper visual function of the eye.

The meibomian glands in the eyelids produce an oily fluid or lipid layer that forms the tear film. This film keeps our eyes from drying out. If these glands do not work adequately or become clogged, an unstable tear film is created, resulting in dehydration of the cornea. This causes the glands to swell, which causes itching, blurred vision and annoying irritation.

The most common causes of dry eyes are:

  • Insufficient production of tears by the tear gland.

  • Tear fluid of insufficient quality.

  • Too little blinking while staring at television or computer screen

  • Menopause

  • Medication use, such as antidepressants

  • Autoimmune disease

Dry eyes: Symptoms

Woman rubs her dry, tired eyes - a typical symptom of dry eyes.

Dryness of the eyes is often a chronic condition, with the intensity of symptoms fluctuating.

A patient with dry eyes experiences a combination of symptoms:

  • Stinging eyes

  • Gritty feeling

  • Red eyes

  • Blurred vision

  • Tired eyes

  • Mucous formation

  • Tearing eyes. The tear gland will paradoxically make more tear fluid but the tear ducts cannot handle this amount, so the eye begins to water.

Treating dry eyes: the classic approach

Woman administers artificial tears to her eye for relief of dry eyes.

Artificial tears: temporary relief for dry eyes

Artificial tears are eye drops that mimic the natural tear film to provide temporary relief from dry eyes. They help to moisten the surface of the eye and reduce symptoms such as burning, itching or a sandy feeling. Although artificial tears can effectively relieve symptoms, they do not cure the underlying cause of dry eyes. The soothing effect usually lasts about 30 minutes, after which the symptoms may gradually return. Persistent or severe symptoms may require using the drops several times a day.

Using artificial tears is generally safe: you can re-drip without danger as soon as the effect wears off. Because every eye is different, there are different types of artificial tears, for example, with or without preservatives or extra thickness (gel form). In case of persistent symptoms, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive examination. Additional dry eye treatment, such as warm compresses, special lenses or other medication, may be needed to address the causes of your dry eyes rather than just treating the symptoms.

Closing the tear ducts with punctum plugs

For dry eyes, it may help to reduce the flow of tear fluid. One effective option is the closure of the tear ducts (puncta) with so-called punctum plugs. These small, usually silicone or collagen "plugs" are placed in the tear tip (punctum) of the eye so that tears do not drain too quickly into the nasal cavity. The result is that tears stay on the surface of the eye longer, which can significantly relieve dry eye symptoms.

Applying punctum plugs is a relatively simple procedure that is often performed under local anesthesia. Depending on your situation, the ophthalmologist may choose either temporary or permanent plugs. Although the procedure is effective in many patients, it is important to have your eyes checked by a specialist. This will help determine if this dry eye treatment is right for you, or if another approach (such as artificial tears or warm compresses) is more effective.

Dry eye treatment: the most advanced technology

At Focus Eye Clinic, we offer an effective, painless and safe solution for dry eyes based on the latest technology. The combination of the LipiScan and LipiFlow allows us to thoroughly identify and treat the cause of your symptoms.

Diagnosis of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) with the LipiScan

With the LipiScan, we visualize the health of your meibomian glands in high resolution. When there is dysfunction of these glands, such as blockages or insufficient oil production, it can lead to unstable tear film and dry eyes.

What is LipiScan?

LipiScan is an innovative and advanced diagnostic technology designed to map the health of the eyelids and meibomian glands. These glands play a crucial role in creating the fatty layer in the tear fluid, which is essential for good tear film and comfortable vision. Problems with the meibomian glands can lead to dry eyes, a common and uncomfortable condition.

With LipiScan, eye specialists can quickly and painlessly take images of the meibomian glands, accurately identifying any blockages or damage. This helps with early detection and treatment of dry eye and related conditions, so your symptoms can be effectively and targeted.

Treatment with the LipiFlow

When the LipiScan reveals dysfunction, the innovative LipiFlow treatment is the next step. This method combines controlled heat and gentle massage to cleanse the meibomian glands and restore their function.

How does LipiFlow work?

  1. Comfortable activators.
Special shell-shaped activators are placed on the inside of your eyelids. These provide controlled heat and gentle massage while keeping the cornea protected thanks to the curved design.

  2. Targeted heat
The activators heat the roots of the meibomius glands to a safe temperature of 42.5°C. This liquefies hardened oil, an essential step to free the glands.

  3. Massage to remove blockages
At the same time, the activators exert rhythmic pressure, massaging away blockages and pushing out the oil. This completely cleanses the glands and restores their normal function.

The benefits of LipiFlow

  • Fast: The treatment takes only 12 minutes per eye.

  • Painless: The procedure is completely comfortable and safe.

  • Medication-free: Restores the glands without medication.

  • Safe: Thanks to built-in sensors, heat and pressure are precisely controlled.

Results of lipiflow

After LipiFlow treatment, your meibomian glands work optimally again, making the tear film more stable and the dryness of your eyes disappear. You will notice a difference in comfort and vision quality almost immediately.
