Infection of the eyelids:
Infections of the eyelids, such as a hordeolum (also called a stump ), can occur on either the outside(hordeolum externum) or inside(hordeolum internum) of the eyelid due to a clogged and infected sebaceous gland. A chalazion, on the other hand, is a painless swelling caused by a blocked gland without acute infection.
Chalasion
A chalazion -often colloquially referred to as a ridge granulation or hail is a chronic inflammation of a sebaceous gland in the eyelid, Meibom's gland. The inflammation occurs when the drainage of this gland becomes blocked.
Hordeolum
A hordeolum externum or stump manifests as a small, painful, red nodule on the eyelid margin. A hordeolum can occur on either the lower or upper eyelid margin.
