What is astigmatism?

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is an eye defect in which the cornea or lens of the eye has an irregular shape. Normally, the cornea is round, like a perfect sphere, allowing light rays to focus evenly on a single point on the retina. In astigmatism, the cornea or lens has an oval shape, similar to a rugby ball. This causes an uneven refraction of light, causing light rays to be focused at multiple points in front of or behind the retina.

This abnormality affects the way the eye processes images and can lead to distorted vision. Astigmatism is a common condition that is often congenital, but can also result from changes in the shape of the cornea throughout life. It often occurs in combination with other refractive errors such as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Symptoms of astigmatism

Symptoms of astigmatism vary depending on severity, but the most common symptoms are:

  • Blurred or distorted vision - Letters and objects appear stretched or shadowy.
  • Headache and eye strain - Due to effort to focus.
  • Double vision or dizziness - Especially during prolonged reading or working on a screen.
  • Night vision problems - Lights may show halos or streaks in the dark.

If you regularly suffer from these symptoms, it is wise to get an eye measurement.

Causes of astigmatism

A woman undergoes an eye examination with a foropter, which is used to diagnose astigmatism and other eye abnormalities. Astigmatism can be caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea, heredity or eye injury.

Astigmatism results from an irregular curvature of the cornea or lens of the eye. The main causes are:

  • Congenital defect - Astigmatism is often hereditary and present from birth.
  • Eye injury or surgery - Damage to the cornea can change its shape.
  • Changes due to aging - Astigmatism can increase with age.
  • Eye diseases such as keratoconus - This creates a cone-shaped cornea and worsens astigmatism.

An optometrist or ophthalmologist can determine if you have astigmatism and what treatments are best.
