Hypermetropia (farsightedness): causes, symptoms and eye laser treatment

What is hyperopia

Medical illustration of an eye with hyperopia (farsightedness), in which light rays are focused behind the retina instead of on it, leading to blurred near vision. A comparison with a normal eye is also shown.

Hypermetropia, also known as farsightedness, is a common eye disorder in which the eye has difficulty seeing near objects sharply. This problem occurs because the eye focuses light rays not correctly on the retina, but behind it. This can be caused by an eyeball that is too short, an eye lens that is too flat, or a combination of both.

People with hypermetropia often have clear vision in the distance, but near vision can become blurry, especially with prolonged exertion such as reading or working on a computer. In addition to blurred vision, symptoms may include headaches, eyestrain and difficulty concentrating.

Hypermetropia can be easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses. For those who do not want to wear glasses or lenses, refractive treatments, such as laser surgery or implant lenses, are available to permanently correct this eye defect. With the right treatment, vision can be significantly improved.

Symptoms of hyperopia

Blurred vision on a busy road in the dark, illustrating the symptom of hyperopia (farsightedness). People with hypermetropia often experience difficulty focusing on close objects and may suffer from eyestrain or headaches.

Hypermetropia, also known as farsightedness, causes objects up close to appear blurry, while far away objects are often still seen sharply. The main symptoms are:

  • Blurred near vision - Difficulty reading or focusing on a phone or book.
  • Eye strain - Eyes quickly become strained from prolonged reading or screen use.
  • Headaches - Especially after exertion such as working on a computer or studying.
  • Burning or dry eyes - Due to constantly forcing them to focus.
  • Squinting (in children) - Hypermetropia can lead to squinting or a lazy eye.

An eye exam with a specialist can determine if hypermetropia is the cause of these symptoms and what treatment is best.

Causes of hyperopia

Bril voor optotyp

Hypermetropia, or farsightedness, occurs when the eye does not focus light rays correctly on the retina, causing near objects to be seen blurred. The main causes are:

  • Too-short eyeball - The eye is shorter than normal, causing the image to be projected behind the retina instead of onto it.
  • Abnormal curvature of the cornea or lens - If the cornea or lens of the eye is not strong enough, light does not bend sufficiently, leading to farsightedness.
  • Heredity - Hypermetropia is often genetic. If parents are farsighted, their children are more likely to develop it as well.
  • Aging (presbyopia) - With age, the flexibility of the lens of the eye decreases, which can contribute to difficulty focusing up close.

An eye exam with a specialist can determine if hyperopia is present and what treatments, such as glasses, contact lenses or laser eye surgery, are appropriate.
