What is myopia

A medical illustration of an eye with myopia (nearsightedness), in which light rays converge in front of the retina rather than on it, leading to blurred vision in the distance. A comparison with a normal eye is also shown.

Myopia or nearsightedness is an abnormality of the eye in which one perceives objects blurred in the distance but can see sharply up close.

Myopia is not a disease, but a refractive error (= a refractive error) in the optical system of the eye. To see sharply, both the cornea and the lens must refract light rays and project them onto the retina, a layer of light-sensitive cells lining the eye's fundus. There, the light is converted into electrical impulses that are transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve.

A nearsighted eye is longer than the "normal" eye. In an eye that is too long, or an eye with a lens system that is too curved (too convex), the focal length of the eye lens is too short and the image is projected in front of the retina, creating a blurred image.

About 30% of the Western population is nearsighted. Myopia usually begins to develop from 8 to 12 years of age and may continue to evolve during growth. In adulthood, the refractive error usually stabilizes.

Symptoms of myopia

A person holds a pair of glasses in front of him, where the image through the lenses is sharp and detailed, while the surroundings outside appear blurred and out of focus. This illustrates the symptom of nearsightedness (myopia).

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is an eye defect in which distant objects are perceived blurry, while up close everything remains sharp. This is because the eye is too long or the eye lens refracts too much, causing the image to be projected in front of the retina instead of onto it.

Common symptoms of myopia:

- Blurred distance vision - Problems reading road signs, blackboards or TV screens.

- Difficulty driving - Especially in the dark, night blindness can occur due to scattering of light.

- Squinting the eyes - Many people with myopia squint their eyes half closed to see more sharply.

- Headaches and eyestrain - Excessive focusing can cause headaches and eyestrain.

- Seeing everything perfectly close by - Reading and working at short distances are not a problem.

In children, myopia can manifest itself through frequent blinking, difficulty with schoolwork at a distance and sitting close to the screen.

An eye measurement at an ophthalmologist or optician is the best way to detect myopia and determine the appropriate correction, such as glasses, contact lenses or laser eye surgery (LASIK, PRK, ReLEx SMILE).

Causes of myopia

Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when light rays converge in front of the retina instead of on it, causing blurred vision in the distance. The main causes are:

1. Heredity: Genetic predisposition plays a major role. If parents are nearsighted, their children are more likely to get it too.

2. Lots of close viewing: Prolonged reading, studying and screen use can exacerbate myopia.

3. Not enough outdoor light: Natural daylight helps regulate eye growth; a deficiency increases the risk of myopia.

4. Abnormal eye growth: An eyeball that is too long or a cornea that is too curved leads to blurred vision at a distance.

5. Rapid myopia progression: Especially in children, myopia can progress rapidly, increasing the risk of eye problems later in life.

Regular eye checkups and adequate time outdoors can help slow the progression of myopia.
