What is presbyopia

Presbyopia, or farsightedness in old age, is an eye disorder in which one's near vision is worse.

When we are born, our eye lens is very flexible. Children are able to allow the eye lens to become vastly more convex (accommodative), which allows them to see images right in front of the eye in razor sharp focus. However, this ability to accommodate decreases with age. The lens becomes less flexible and can no longer be curved as much, making it difficult to see objects sharply up close. We don't notice this until we start having trouble reading, usually starting at age 40.

This reduction in accommodative ability occurs independently of other existing eye disorders and thus can occur simultaneously with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Symptoms of presbyopia

A woman holds her phone at a distance and squeezes her eyes together to read the text, a typical symptom of presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). This occurs because the lens of the eye becomes less flexible, making close focusing difficult.

Presbyopia, also called farsightedness in old age, occurs when the lens of the eye becomes less flexible, making close focusing more difficult. One of the first symptoms is having to hold a book or phone further and further away to read the text clearly. In addition, people may experience eyestrain and headaches, especially after prolonged reading or screen use. In poorly lit areas, it becomes more difficult to distinguish small letters. Some people also experience blurred vision when switching between near and far vision. These symptoms usually worsen gradually from the age of 40.

Causes of presbyopia

A woman relaxes in the grass and reads a book at a distance, a sign of presbyopia (age-related farsightedness). This condition results from the natural aging process of the eye lens, which makes focusing at close range more difficult.

Presbyopia, or senile farsightedness, occurs due to the natural aging process of the eye lens. As we age, the lens loses its flexibility, making it more difficult to focus on close objects. This process usually begins around age 40 and gradually worsens.

The elasticity of the lens of the eye decreases, making it less able to accommodate, or adjust focus at different distances. This is because the protein structures in the lens harden and the ciliary muscles, which are responsible for contracting and relaxing the lens, lose their strength. This makes it more difficult to focus on small print in books, on a smartphone or on a computer screen.

Although presbyopia is a natural part of aging, there are factors that can accelerate the process. Heredity plays a role; if your parents needed reading glasses at a young age, you are more likely to experience the same. In addition, medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems and multiple sclerosis can adversely affect lens elasticity. Certain medications, such as antidepressants and antihistamines, can also affect the eyes' ability to focus.

Lifestyle factors such as prolonged screen use, exposure to bright light and insufficient eye rest can potentially worsen presbyopia. Although the process cannot be stopped, there are several ways to correct the symptoms, such as reading glasses, progressive lenses or laser eye surgery.
