What is cataract surgery with laser

Cataract surgery with laser: Femtocataract
A femtosecond laser is an advanced medical laser that makes ultra-fast and extremely precise cuts in eye tissue without heat generation. The name refers to the femtosecond, one billionth of a second (0.000000000000001 seconds), which provides exceptional precision at the microscopic level.
In ophthalmology, the femtosecond laser is used primarily in cataract surgery and laser eye surgery. The laser replaces certain manual steps of the procedure, such as making incisions and fragmenting the cloudy lens. This reduces the use of mechanical instruments and improves the accuracy and safety of treatment.

Benefits of cataract surgery with laser
- Minimal tissue damage: The laser works with extremely short pulses, reducing the strain on surrounding tissue.
- High precision: The computer-guided technology makes precise cuts, which is crucial in eye surgery.
- Better outcome prediction: The laser makes consistent and reproducible cuts, contributing to a more stable visual outcome.
- Fewer complications: The technique reduces the risk of astigmatism and improves implant lens positioning.
Cataract surgery with laser explained for you in 4 steps

Step 1: Limbal relaxing incisions.
Femtolaser arcuate incisions are precise incisions on the cornea using a femtosecond laser. They are used to correct astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. This advanced technique offers improved precision and accuracy compared to manual incisions, resulting in improved visual outcomes for patients.

Step 2 : Femtolaser capsulorexis
Femtolaser capsulorexis is a surgical technique used to create a precise circular opening in the anterior capsule of the natural lens of the eye. This technique offers improved control and accuracy, facilitating subsequent removal of the cataract and placement of an intraocular lens. Femtolaser capsulorexis contributes to safer and more predictable cataract surgery with better visual outcomes.

Step 3 : Femtolaser lens fragmentation
Femtolaser capsulorexis is a surgical technique used to create a precise circular opening in the anterior capsule of the natural lens of the eye. This technique offers improved control and accuracy, facilitating subsequent removal of the cataract and placement of an intraocular lens. Femtolaser capsulorexis contributes to safer and more predictable cataract surgery with better visual outcomes.

Step 4: Femtolaser incisions.
Femtolaser incisions are precise cuts made using a femtosecond laser. This advanced technology offers exceptional precision, control and customization. Femtolaser incisions provide improved wound healing, fewer complications and improved visual outcomes.

What is a bifocal lens

Intraocular lenses with two focal points
Bifocal intraocular lenses are designed to provide clear vision at two different distances: distant and near. These lenses correct your vision for important tasks such as driving and reading, reducing your reliance on glasses. By combining two focal points, bifocal lenses offer a practical solution for patients who want sharp vision at multiple distances. Although some intermediate distances may still require glasses, bifocal IOLs offer a significant improvement in visual versatility and daily convenience.
Vision with bifocal lens

With the implantation of a bifocal intraocular lens (IOL), vision is corrected for both distant and near vision. This means that after the procedure, patients can see sharply and clearly for activities such as driving, reading or using a smartphone. Bifocal lenses offer a practical solution for people looking for a wider range of visual capabilities without constant reliance on glasses.
While some intermediate distances may still require correction, a bifocal IOL offers a significant improvement in daily convenience and visual versatility. With this lens, you will enjoy reliable, sharp vision for most daily activities.
Choosing an intraocular lens (IOL)
A personal and medical decision

Choosing an intraocular lens (IOL) is an important step in your cataract treatment and a very personal decision. This choice goes beyond restoring your vision; it also determines what your daily life and glasses dependence will look like after surgery.
During the consultation, we will discuss in detail your individual needs, lifestyle and preferences. For example, are you someone who prefers to be glasses-free for distant vision? Or do you have an active lifestyle where you want a wider range of vision distances without glasses? In addition to your preferences, medical factors also play a crucial role.
We evaluate your eye health and take into account any additional eye conditions, such as dry eye, macular degeneration or glaucoma. In addition, the optical parameters of your eye are carefully measured, such as the shape of the cornea and the length of the eye. This data helps us choose the lens that not only suits your preferences, but also offers the best outcome for your unique eye structure.
At Focus Eye Clinic, we guide you through this process step by step. Our goal is to select a lens that perfectly suits your visual needs while providing optimal medical outcomes. Feel free to contact us to discover together which IOL is best for you. Your vision, comfort and satisfaction are our focus.
The different lens options

The monofocal lens
A monofocal lens corrects vision for one specific distance, usually distant. Patients can see sharply at a distance after surgery, ideal for activities such as driving and watching television. For close-up activities such as reading or using a smartphone, reading glasses remain necessary.

Bifocal lens
A bifocal lens provides correction for both distant and near vision. This reduces dependence on glasses for daily activities, but may have limitations for intermediate distances, such as working at a computer. Patients may still need glasses for specific tasks.

Multifocal lens
A multifocal lens provides sharp vision at multiple distances: distant, near and intermediate. This makes it possible to greatly reduce dependence on glasses or even be completely glasses-free. Multifocal lenses are ideal for people seeking a versatile solution for their vision.

Personalized advice from our experts
Our highly specialized surgeons do a thorough diagnosis and analysis of your eyes. They will discuss all options with you in complete objectivity.
Femtocataract: The treatment step by step

Step 1: Your improved vision begins with a comprehensive consultation
The path to improved vision begins with a comprehensive eye examination and consultation with an experienced ophthalmic surgeon during the initial consultation. During this visit, you will undergo a series of technical examinations to fully assess your eyes. This allows us to determine the most appropriate approach for your femtocataract treatment.
The doctor carefully evaluates your refractive error and takes into account important aspects such as your general health, the condition of your eyes and your daily visual needs. Factors such as your occupation, hobbies and other visual activities are taken into account to ensure that your new vision best fits your lifestyle.
For measurement accuracy, we ask that you not wear contact lenses for 5 days prior to your examination. This helps us analyze the shape and properties of your cornea as precisely as possible.
At Focus Eye Clinic, we strive to not only restore, but improve your vision so that you can once again enjoy your daily activities with confidence.

Step 2: Preparation for surgery
You will be received by our qualified nursing staff. They will make the necessary preparations to get you ready for the procedure, such as the insertion of eye drops. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.
You will be given a light sedative. Your eyes are numbed locally with drops. Therefore, you will not undergo anesthesia or general anesthesia.
You will be escorted to the operating room.
Your eye will be thoroughly disinfected and covered with a sterile dressing.
Your eyelashes are held aside and your eye is again numbed locally.
An eyelid retainer is placed so that you can no longer blink or squeeze your eyes shut.

Step 3 : The procedure itself
After dilation of the pupil, with femto laser (Z8 ZIEMER), two micro incisions (2.2 mm and 1 mm) are made in the cornea.
Afterwards, the same Femto laser is used to create a perfectly nicely centered round opening in the capsule. The femto laser will fragment the lens and prepare it for aspiration with the phako device.
The surgeon inserts the bifocal or multifocal lens through the micro incision. Afterwards, the micro incision is closed without wires.

Step 4: Enjoy life!
After surgery
One day after surgery, you can see well again and most people can soon function normally. Although it may still take a few weeks for vision to fully stabilize. Some patients may initially see halos around lights, especially at night. Thanks to the brain's habituation to the new lenses, these phenomena gradually disappear after a few weeks.
Aftercare
The treatment schedule with the eye drops is explained by the nursing team. You must apply medication eye drops for 1 month. Daily activities such as household chores, sports, driving and desk work can be resumed very soon. If in doubt, consult with your doctor.
Check-ups:
1st checkup: one day after the procedure.
2nd control: after one month.
