SMILE RELEX Laser eye surgery - The minimally invasive refractive eye laser
Discover SMILE: the innovative eye laser treatment that offers you a glasses-free life with maximum precision, comfort and fast recovery!
SIMLE laser eye surgery: step-by-step

Step 1: Evaluation during screening
Your glasses-free life begins with a comprehensive eye examination and consultation with an ophthalmic surgeon during the initial screening. You will undergo a series of technical examinations in which the cornea is fully mapped. To determine if you are a suitable candidate for SMILE eye laser treatment, the doctor evaluates your refractive error and, of course, also takes into account your motivation, your profession and your hobbies. We ask that you not wear contact lenses for 5 days in order to take the most accurate measurements of the cornea.

Step 2 : Preparation for surgery
Final pre-operative analyses are performed.
You will be given a light sedative. Your eyes will be locally anesthetized with drops. You will therefore not undergo anesthesia or general anesthesia.
You will be escorted to the operating room.
Your eyes will be thoroughly disinfected and covered with a sterile dressing.
Your eyelashes are held to the side and your eyes are again numbed locally.
An eyelid retainer is placed so that you can no longer blink or squeeze your eyes shut.

Step 3 : Creation of the lenticule vie de Femtolaser
During the SMILE treatment, the advanced femtosecond laser creates an ultra-thin lenticule (disc of corneal tissue) in the middle layer of the cornea. This lenticule is formed with extreme precision based on your eye defect. Through a small incision of only a few millimeters, the lenticule is removed, giving the cornea its new shape and correcting your vision. This innovative technique minimizes the risk of complications and ensures a quick recovery.

Step 4: Lenticule removal.
During SMILE treatment, the created lenticule (a thin disc of corneal tissue) is carefully removed through a small incision of only a few millimeters. With extreme precision, the lenticule is detached and pulled outward, allowing the cornea to assume its new, corrected shape. This minimally invasive step is comfortable for the patient and promotes a quick and smooth recovery process.

Step 5: correction of the refractive error
After removing the lenticule during SMILE treatment, the cornea takes on a new shape, correcting the refractive error. This process causes light rays to refocus precisely on the retina, resulting in sharp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Recovery after Smile laser eye surgery
A quick and smooth recovery follows treatment with Smile Relex. After the procedure, you should wear protective glasses for 24 hours, during which time irritation may also occur. The first day after the Smile procedure follows the first check-up moment.
After the Smile laser treatment our nursing team is ready to go over the treatment schedule with you. To promote recovery, eye drops are recommended for the first three months.

Step 6 : Enjoy life!
After the operation
You will be taken to the rest and relaxation zone where you will stay for about 30 minutes.
You will be given protective goggles to wear for 24 hours.
Aftercare
The treatment schedule with the eye drops will be explained by the nursing team.
You will only need to apply medication eye drops for 5 days.
After these 5 days, you will only need to use artificial tears.
Checks
1st control: one day after the operation.
2nd examination: one week after the operation.
3rd examination: after two to three months.
These checks are included in the price.

What is laser eye surgery?
Laser eye surgery is a treatment in which the shape of the cornea is adjusted using a laser beam. With this advanced technique, refractive errors such as nearsightedness(myopia), farsightedness(hyperopia) and cylindrical defects(astigmatism) can be corrected. Common methods of laser eye surgery include Femto-LASIK, SMILE, and PRK/LASEK, all of which provide a safe and effective solution to enable a life without glasses or contact lenses.
What happens during laser eye surgery?
In laser eye surgery, Femto-LASIK treatment is performed in several steps. First, a femto-laser creates a thin flap in the upper layer of the cornea. Next, an Excimer laser adjusts the shape of the cornea to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. After treatment, the flap is carefully replaced. The procedure is quick and efficient, with a treatment time of only 5 minutes per eye.
When is it not possible to laser your eyes?
Laser eye surgery with the Femto-LASIK technique is not possible or not recommended in some situations. The following are the main reasons:
Femto-LASIK in pregnancy
Hormonal changes are expected during pregnancy or breastfeeding, which makes the results of laser treatment less predictable. It is therefore advisable to delay treatment until about 3 months after delivery.
Avoiding Femto-LASIK in certain conditions.
The following medical conditions make Femto-LASIK treatment less suitable:
- Eye infections
- Herpes in or around the eye
- Keratoconus (an abnormality of the cornea)
- Use of cortisone (corticosteroids)
In these cases, alternative treatment or further investigation may be required.
Femto-LASIK and professions.
For certain occupational categories, such as in aviation, the military, or other positions with strict requirements, Femto-LASIK is not allowed. In such situations, PRK treatment may be considered, which is often approved.
How long does laser treatment take?
A laser treatment, such as Femto-LASIK, PRK, or SMILE, is a quick and efficient procedure. The treatment itself takes only 3 to 6 minutes per eye, depending on the technique and complexity of the correction.
The entire process, including preparation and aftercare, usually takes about 2 hours. This includes:
- Preparation of the eyes.
- Application of the laser treatment.
- Monitoring by the ophthalmologist after the procedure.
The quick treatment time makes laser eye surgery a popular choice for people who want to improve their vision without lengthy procedures.
Will both eyes be lasered at the same time?
Yes, laser eye surgery usually treats both eyes in the same session. This is safe and common, and ensures a short recovery time. In special cases, such as medical indications, it may be chosen to treat the eyes separately.
Is laser treatment painful?
No, laser treatment is generally not painful. Anesthetic eye drops are administered before the procedure, so you won't feel any pain during the treatment.
After treatment, you may experience some temporary discomfort, such as a burning sensation or light sensitivity. This usually disappears within a few hours to days, depending on the technique chosen, such as Femto-LASIK, SMILE, or PRK.
Modern techniques make laser eye surgery comfortable and fast.
Is laser eye surgery safe?
Yes, laser eye surgery is a safe and proven treatment method. Modern techniques such as Femto-LASIK, SMILE, and PRK are used worldwide and have a high success rate.
The procedure is performed by experienced ophthalmologists and advanced equipment that works with extreme precision. Prior to treatment, a thorough examination is performed to determine your suitability, which further enhances safety.
Complications are rare and most patients recover quickly with permanent improvements in their vision.
Can you get your eyes lasered during pregnancy?
No, it is not recommended to have your eyes lasered during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can affect the shape of the cornea, making the results less predictable.
It is better to delay treatment until about 3 months after giving birth, so that your eyes are fully stabilized. This also applies while breastfeeding.
Can you have your eyes lasered after cataract surgery?
Yes, after cataract surgery, it is possible to have your eyes lasered, but it depends on your situation. Laser eye surgery can be used to correct small remaining refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
Your eye doctor will assess your suitability for laser treatment. It is important that your eyes have fully recovered from cataract surgery and your eye strength is stable. This usually takes several months.
Can you laser your eyes with a plus deviation?
Yes, laser eye surgery can also be used for a plus deviation(farsightedness or hyperopia). With techniques such as Femto-LASIK, PRK, or SMILE, the shape of the cornea can be adjusted to improve vision.
Suitability depends on factors such as the strength of your plus deviation, the thickness of your cornea, and the health of your eyes. A preliminary examination with your eye doctor determines whether laser eye surgery is possible in your case.
Can you get your eyes lasered with a cylinder deviation?
Yes, laser eye surgery is an effective solution to a cylinder defect(astigmatism). Techniques such as Femto-LASIK, PRK, or SMILE correct the shape of the cornea so that light rays are better focused on the retina.
The option depends on the severity of the cylinder defect, the thickness of your cornea, and the overall health of your eyes. A comprehensive preliminary examination determines whether laser treatment is appropriate for your situation.
Is laser eye surgery possible with diabetes?
Yes, laser eye surgery is possible with diabetes, but it depends on how well your diabetes is controlled and the health of your eyes.
Conditions for safe treatment:
- Good blood sugar control: Your diabetes must be stable, without large fluctuations in blood sugars.
- No diabetic eye complications: Such as diabetic retinopathy or maculopathy, as these conditions can affect the outcome of treatment.
A thorough preliminary examination by an ophthalmologist is essential to assess whether laser eye surgery is safe and effective in your situation. In some cases, the risk may be too great, and other methods of correction are recommended.
From what age can you get your eyes lasered?
You can have your eyes lasered from the age of 18, provided your eye strength has remained stable for at least 1 to 2 years.
Stable eye strength is important to ensure that the results of treatment are lasting. In younger patients, laser treatments are not recommended because the eyes are still developing and the strength can change. A thorough preliminary examination determines your suitability for laser eye surgery.
From what strength can you get your eyes lasered?
Laser eye surgery is possible for a wide range of strengths, depending on the technique and your eye health:
- Nearsightedness (myopia): Up to about -10 diopters.
- Farsightedness (hyperopia): Up to about +6.5 diopters.
- Cylinder deviation (astigmatism): Up to about -6 diopters.
The exact limits may vary by person and treatment technique, such as Femto-LASIK, PRK, or SMILE. A thorough preliminary examination determines whether your strength is within safe limits for laser eye surgery.
Up to what strength can you have your eyes lasered?
- Myopia from -0.5 to -10 diopters
- Hypermetropia from +0.5 to +6.5 diopters
- Astigmatism from 0.5 to 6 diopters
How long do the results of laser treatment last?
The results of laser eye surgery are usually permanent. The shape of the cornea is permanently altered, so refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism remain corrected.
However, your vision may change over time due to natural aging, such as:
- Presbyopia (age-related farsightedness): This usually occurs from age 40-45 and cannot be prevented with laser eye surgery.
- Progressive changes: In rare cases, the original refractive error may recur slightly.
Regular checkups with the eye doctor help to notice and address any changes in vision.
Can I get dry eyes after laser eye surgery?
Yes, dry eyes are a common temporary side effect of laser eye surgery, especially with techniques such as Femto-LASIK. During treatment, nerves in the cornea are affected, which can temporarily reduce tear production.
Symptoms of dry eyes after laser eye surgery:
- Burning sensation.
- Red or irritated eyes.
- Fatigue of the eyes.
Treatment and recovery from dry eyes after eye laser surgery:
- Eye drops: Artificial tears help relieve symptoms.
- Recovery period: Most patients experience improvement within a few weeks to months.
In rare cases, dry eyes may remain long-term. An ophthalmologist assesses this risk prior to treatment.
Can I use makeup after laser treatment?
No, it is recommended not to use makeup on or around the eyes for the first week after treatment. This prevents irritation and the risk of infection.
Tips for makeup after laser eye surgery:
- Wait at least 7 days before applying eye makeup.
- Use new makeup to avoid bacteria.
- Avoid waterproof mascara and eyeliner during the first few weeks because they are more difficult to remove.
How long does recovery from laser eye surgery take?
Recovery after laser eye surgery varies by person and treatment method:
- Immediately after treatment: Your vision may be blurry and your eyes feel irritated. This usually improves within a few hours.
- Within 1 to 2 days: With Femto-LASIK, vision is often mostly restored.
- Within a few weeks: With PRK or SMILE, it may take a little longer for your vision to be completely stable.
You can usually resume light activities after 1 to 2 days, but full recovery and stabilization of vision may take several months. Your eye doctor will perform checkups to monitor your progress.
When can I return to swimming after laser eye surgery?
You can usually return to swimming 2 weeks after eye laser treatment.
Guidelines:
- Swimming in chlorinated water (swimming pools): Wait at least 2 weeks to avoid irritation and infection.
- Swimming in natural waters (sea or lakes): Wait at least 4 weeks because of the increased risk of bacterial infections.
- Use of swimming goggles: As soon as you are allowed to swim again, wear swimming goggles for extra protection.
Your eye doctor will give specific recommendations based on your situation and recovery.
Do both eyes recover equally quickly after eye surgery?
Yes, in most cases, both eyes recover at about the same rate after laser eye surgery. However, the rate of recovery can vary slightly depending on factors such as:
- Individual variation: Each eye can respond differently to treatment.
- Refractive error: If one eye had a higher strength, it may take slightly longer for vision to become fully stable.
- Technique: With techniques such as Femto-LASIK, recovery is often faster and more even than with PRK.
Will I have pain after the eye laser treatment?
No, pain after laser eye surgery is usually minimal. Thanks to numbing eye drops, you won't feel any pain during the treatment. However, you may experience some discomfort after the treatment, depending on the technique used:
- Femto-LASIK: Slight burning sensation or dryness, usually gone within a few hours.
- PRK: More discomfort and sensitivity to pain, especially in the first 2 to 3 days.
Better laser eye surgery or lens implantation?
The choice depends on your situation:
- Laser eye surgery: Ideal for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism down to -10 or +4 diopters. Not suitable for thin corneas or high strengths.
- Lens Implantation (ICL): Suitable for higher strengths or if laser eye surgery is not possible. Reversible, but more invasive and expensive.
What is the difference between lasek and lasik?
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis):
- A thin flap of the cornea is created with a laser.
- Suitable for a wide range of refractive errors.
- Quick recovery time (usually within 1-2 days).
LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy):
- Only the top layer of the cornea (epithelium) is detached.
- Suitable in thin cornea or higher risk cases.
- Slower recovery time (several days to a week).
Which eye laser method is best?
The best laser eye surgery method depends on your specific situation, such as the strength of your eyes, the thickness of your cornea and your lifestyle. Here are the three main methods:
- Femto-LASIK:
- Most widely used method, fast recovery, suitable for most refractive errors.
- Best choice for normal eye health.
- SMILE:
- Minimal flapless procedure, faster recovery and less risk of dry eyes.
- Ideal for myopia and mild astigmatism.
- PRK/LASEK:
- No flap, suitable for thin corneas or specific occupations.
- Longer recovery time, but similar results.
A preliminary examination determines which method is best for your eyes.
