Better laser eye surgery or lens implantation?
Laser eye surgery (such as LASIK, PRK or SMILE) is the most commonly chosen option for people between the ages of 18 and 45 with stable glasses or contact lenses. The treatment is quick, safe and provides lasting results. It is ideal for light to moderate strengths (up to about -10 or +4 diopters) and astigmatism. Recovery is usually quick, especially with LASIK and SMILE, allowing you to return to normal function within days.
For people over the age of 45, or for whom laser eye surgery is not appropriate, lens implantation (ICL or multifocal implant lenses) offers an excellent alternative. This is especially appropriate for high strengths or when the cornea is too thin for laser treatments. With ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens), an additional lens is placed in front of one's own eye lens, while with refractive lens replacement, the natural eye lens is replaced with an artificial lens. The latter is ideal in cases of presbyopia (farsightedness).
Which treatment is best?
The best choice depends on your age, strength and medical fitness. Are you young and have a low to moderate strength? Then laser eye surgery is ideal. Do you have a high strength or are over 45? Then lens implantation is often a better option. A consultation at Focus Eye Clinic will help you make the best decision based on a personalized screening.
