Can an artificial lens detach after cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery involves replacing the eye's natural lens with an artificial lens, which is usually placed in the lens capsule. In most cases, the artificial lens remains stable for life and provides clear, sharp vision.

However, in rare cases, an artificial lens can loosen or shift, which is known as lens luxation or lens dislocation. This can be caused by:

- Weakening of the lens capsule after surgery

- Eye trauma or a hard blow to the eye

- Conditions such as pseudoexfoliation syndrome, in which the suspension bands of the lens weaken

- A previous vitreous surgery (vitrectomy)

If an artificial lens shifts, it can cause blurred vision, double vision or light distortions. In some cases, corrective surgery is needed to reposition or replace the lens.

At Focus Eye Clinic, each patient is closely monitored after cataract surgery to check the stability of the artificial lens and detect possible complications in a timely manner.
