Is it best to choose laser eye surgery or a lens implant?
? Laser eye surgery (LASIK, PRK, SMILE)
Suitable for:
✅ People between the ages of 18 and 45 with stable eye strength.
✅ People with mild to moderate myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
✅ Those who want a quick and safe correction without an implant.
Benefits:
✔️ Minimally invasive - no implants required.
✔️ Rapid recovery - clear vision within days.
✔️ Durable result, depending on age and strength stability.
Possible disadvantages:
⚠️ Not suitable for high eye strengths (nearsightedness from -10 or farsightedness from +4).
⚠️ May cause dry eyes in some patients.
⚠️ Not suitable in cases of age-related farsightedness (presbyopia), unless combined with monovision.
? Lens implantation (ICL or multifocal implant lenses)
Suitable for:
✅ Individuals 20 years and older, especially for very high strengths where laser eye surgery is not an option.
✅ People with high myopia (nearsightedness to -23), hypermetropia (farsightedness) or astigmatism.
✅ Those who want a reversible and permanent solution.
✅ Individuals with age-related farsightedness (presbyopia) who are considering multifocal lens implantation.
Benefits:
✔️ Corrects high strengths not possible with laser treatment.
✔️ Preserves the natural shape of the cornea - no risk of thinning or dry eyes.
✔️ ICL lenses can be removed or replaced as needed.
✔️ Multifocal implant lenses provide a solution for presbyopia and often eliminate the need for glasses.
Possible disadvantages:
⚠️ Small chance of infection or side effects, such as halos or glare.
⚠️ Recovery time is slightly longer than with laser eye surgery (usually several days to weeks).
⚠️ For multifocal lenses, there may be an adjustment period before the brain gets used to the new way of seeing.
Which option is best for me?
- Younger than 45 with light to moderate eye strength? → Laser eye surgery is usually the best choice.
- High nearsightedness or farsightedness, or thin cornea? → ICL lenses may offer a solution.
- Do you have cataracts or suffer from presbyopia? → Multifocal implant lenses are the best option.
