Is laser eye surgery possible with diabetes?
Diabetes can affect the eyes and cornea, so not everyone is eligible for laser eye surgery. Patients with stable diabetes and no signs of diabetic retinopathy can be safely treated in many cases. However, if blood sugar levels fluctuate greatly or damage to the retina is already present, laser treatment may not be recommended.
At Focus Eye Clinic, a comprehensive screening is always performed to determine whether the quality of the cornea and stability of the eye strength are suitable for a treatment such as FemtoLASIK, PRK or SMILE ReLEx. If laser treatment proves impossible, ICL implantation (implantable contact lens) may be a good alternative, as it does not affect the cornea.
